Project Description

For many years, Wakefield Kirkgate Train Station in West Yorkshire was home to several derelict buildings, including a long neglected Grade II listed station building and its external spaces. These historic structures had fallen into disrepair, creating a sense of abandonment in what was once a bustling area. Recognising the potential for revitalisation, the Groundwork Trust approached Seed Architects to undertake a comprehensive refurbishment and remodelling of these buildings as part of a high-profile, extensive transformation project.

The project presented unique challenges due to the age and historical significance of the Grade II listed building. Seed Architects needed to carry out a sensitive external restoration that preserved the architectural integrity of the station while simultaneously modernising the internal spaces. The aim was to create a space that retained its historic charm but was also functional and suitable for modern day business use. The remodelled interior was designed to house Groundwork Wakefield’s offices, along with retail units and business starter units, providing both commercial opportunities and community focused spaces.

As lead consultants and contract administrators, Seed Architects managed the project from the initial outline design stage through to its completion and final handover. The team worked closely with the Groundwork Trust and multiple funding partners, ensuring the project not only met but exceeded expectations. The combination of careful restoration and innovative design helped breathe new life into Kirkgate Station while respecting its heritage.

Since its completion, the station has become a hub of activity, significantly increasing in use. Between April 2022 and March 2023, Kirkgate Station saw 507,772 entries and exits, a clear indication of the success of the transformation. The restored station now serves as a vibrant part of the Wakefield community, blending historical preservation with modern functionality, and Seed Architects is proud to have played a leading role in Kirkgate Station’s revival.
