Project Description
Prestige Beds approached Seed Architects with the aim of expanding and refurbishing their existing premises to accommodate their growing business needs. They sought a design that would allow them to hold a larger inventory, enhancing their capacity for sales and overall customer experience.
Seed Architects worked alongside Rosslee Construction to carry out this retail project. The process began with the demolition of the existing front and side conservatory structures, followed by the removal of the original foundations. A new concrete raft foundation was then installed to support the expanded structure. Using masonry for the sub-structure, we created a robust base finished with red facing bricks, lending durability and continuity with the existing building. A steel frame was constructed to integrate seamlessly with the original structure, complemented by a standing seam roof and wall cladding along the roof cheeks for a polished finish.
The updated shop frontage features aluminium framing, double entry doors with both ramp and stair access to enhance accessibility. For the side elevation we used two layers of 100mm blockwork with an internal plaster finish, decorated with a fresh coat of emulsion paint. Inside the building there is a plastered soffit which intersects the suspended ceiling, providing a cohesive and modern look. New lighting and high level heating installations improve both functionality and atmosphere. All walls, both existing and newly constructed, were plastered and painted to achieve a smooth, professional finish.
Since its opening in 2023, the expanded store has enabled Prestige Beds to hold more stock and meet increased customer demand. Reflecting on the project, James Dunne, Director of Operations at Prestige Beds stated “The refurb at Whitebirk has to be one of the best things we’ve done as a business in our 65 years and is a store we are extremely proud of.” The result is a vibrant, functional space which supports the company’s continued growth.
