Project Description
The Knowsley area in Liverpool had long struggled with limited connectivity to the rest of the North West with Liverpool City Region Combined Authority feeling that the key to this would be the “Skelmersdale Rail Link”. Knowsley is the 2nd most deprived local authority in the UK meaning that over 60% of households do not have access to a car. With the alternative modes of public transport also being very poor, the creation of a new train station would be crucial in levelling up the area.
An £80 million investment was secured to construct a new step-free accessible railway station called Headbolt Lane, located east of Kirkby Station. The project involved building a state-of-the-art train station with three platforms designed to provide seamless links between Merseyrail and Northern Trains services, making it an important interchange station for passengers.
The new station building was equipped with ticket office facilities operated by Merseytravel, alongside staff offices, a booking hall, and crew facilities for up to six staff members. The design also prioritised accessibility and convenience, featuring a secure cycle area with space for 80 bicycles and a car park with 270 spaces to accommodate commuters. Pedestrian and vehicular links were established to connect the station with surrounding infrastructure, ensuring ease of access for all.
One of the standout features of the station is the introduction of the UK’s first publicly owned, battery-powered train fleet – a pioneering step toward sustainable public transport.
Headbolt Lane opened on 5th October 2023, making headlines around the country featuring on the likes of BBC News, ITV News, and the Liverpool Echo. The station’s completion marked a significant improvement in regional connectivity, providing local residents with better access to the North West. Additionally, the environmentally friendly battery-powered train fleet demonstrates a commitment to sustainability while serving the local community. This project has created a vital transport hub that will benefit the region for years to come.
